    The Portland L fountain pen made of Bethlehem olive wood was created by me for larger hands or for lovers of heavier and more robust writing pens.It is filled with classic ink cartridges, which you can buy in any stationery shop, and to make the pen a true original you can have it engraved with a message, a monogram, an important date, a name or nickname, a company logo and much more. You will find inspiration in the engraving samples.

    Pen size - Portland L fountain pen

    Pen dimensions

    This pen is called Portland L and it is the largest of the three pen types I make. The length of the closed pen is approx. 146mm. An open pen measures from the tip to the end approx. 131mm. Including the cap it weighs approx. 60g depending on which piece of wood is used. The part you hold in your hand while writing alone weighs approx. 30-35g.

    Is the pen too big and heavy for you? In that case I would recommend the Portland S pens, which are noticeably smaller.

     

    You don't just get a pen,
    but a complete package

    Every pen comes packed in this black luxury box, custom made for me by a Czech company. The package also includes a certificate of authenticity on which you will find information about which wood the pen is made of, what it is treated with and that I really did make it personally.

    This pen is made of Bethlehem olive wood

    Olive wood is known for its beautiful grain. That makes every pen truly unmistakable. I ordered this one specially, straight from Bethlehem.

    Bethlehem olive wood, which was sustainably harvested during the pruning season from olive groves in the Holy Land. This annual pruning encourages new branches to grow and helps the olive trees stay productive. So in obtaining the wood for this item no trees were harmed or destroyed.

    How the pen writes - Portland L fountain pen (1)

    The fountain pen, its nib and filling.

    For fountain pens I use as standard steel nibs in size M (medium), i.e. a medium width. If this nib width doesn't suit you, you can buy a better nib for the pen from the German company JoWo, which I stock in sizes from EF (extra-fine), F (fine), M (medium). B (broad), 1.1 and 1.5. You can see how each nib writes directly on the page of the individual nib. The photo shows text written with the standard size M nib that comes in every pen. 

    By default all fountain pens take standard "EURO" ink cartridges (one blue one is included in the package, see photo), but you can also get a converter(not included in the package), i.e. a refillable cartridge. You can then fill it with any ink you like straight from the bottle, which makes writing cheaper and definitely more colourful, because there are far more ink colours than cartridge colours.

     

    Personal dedication

    Every pen can be engraved with a personal dedication, message, or perhaps a monogram. I use a laser engraver for this. Thanks to it I can put almost any text you wish onto the wooden part of every pen. For inspiration on what can be engraved on a pen, I have put together a short text with more than 70 different ideas of what could be written on a pen. You can also see what the engraved text looks like directly on the wood you like. In this gallery you will find samples of most of the materials I use. If you want the engraving to stand out nicely, I would recommend the lighter woods such as Teak, Zebrano, Padauk or Olive. On Wenge, American walnut or bog oak the dedication will look more subtle.

    I usually place the text on the cap of the pen, either on the side or at the bottom next to the "ring" 

    How to add engraving to your order

    Delivery time

    I send the pens Balíkovna for CZK 79, via Zásilkovna also for CZK 79, or by courier service / Czech Post to your address for CZK 128.

    I always ship promptly, at the latest by the next day after ordering, payment or approval of the engraving. Usually the pen, even with engraving leaves the workshop within 24 hours of ordering and it can be with you within two days. Everything after that depends on the speed of the delivery service you choose.

    Caring for a Novák pen is simple

    To keep the pen looking beautiful, rub it with linseed oil once or twice a month and let it soak in. The kind you can buy in any pharmacy is more than enough. How to get rid of scratches, or how to clean ink off the pen, is explained in the article about pen care.

    How a Novák pen is made

    Take a look at how every wooden Novák pen is made.
