    Product detailed description

    The Portland S ballpoint pen made of exotic American walnut was created by me for smaller hands or for lovers of lighter writing pens. The pen takes standard refills, which you can buy in any stationery shop, and to make the pen a true original you can have it engraved with a message, a monogram, an important date, a name or nickname, a company logo and much more. You will find inspiration in the engraving samples.

    Pen dimensions

    This pen is called Portland S and it is the smallest of the three pen types I make. The length of the closed pen is approx. 131mm. An open pen measures from the tip to the end approx. 123mm. Including the cap it weighs approx. 35-40g depending on which piece of wood is used. The part you hold in your hand while writing alone weighs approx. 25g.

    Is the pen too short or too light for you? In that case I would recommend the Portland L pens, or Altos, which are somewhat larger.

    You don't just get a pen,
    but a complete package

    Every pen comes packed in this black luxury box, custom made for me by a Czech company. The package also includes a certificate of authenticity, on which you will find information about which wood the pen is made of, what it is treated with and that I really did make it personally.

    This beautiful dark wood is widespread across North America and Canada, more precisely from southern Ontario down to Florida. Related species of American walnut, or black walnut, can be found in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Argentina and Mexico. It is a wood loved all over the world, used mainly for furniture and cabinets. The wood is very resistant to impact and decay, but it is prone to insect attack.

    The pen refill

    In the pen I use blue refills from the German company Schmidt. The line width is F (fine). It is a so-called "roller", i.e. a pen with a ceramic ball filled with ink, which is also why the pen has a cap so that it doesn't dry out. You don't have to press on this type of pen the way you do with an ordinary ballpoint, so it writes very smoothly.

    Personal dedication

    Every pen can be engraved with a personal dedication, message, or perhaps a monogram. I use a laser engraver for this. Thanks to it I can put almost any text you wish onto the wooden part of every pen. For inspiration on what can be engraved on a pen, I have put together a short text with more than 70 different ideas. You can also see what the engraved text looks like directly on the wood you like. In this gallery you will find samples of most of the materials I use. If you want the engraving to stand out nicely, I would recommend the lighter woods such as Teak, Zebrano, Padauk or Olive. On Wenge, American walnut or bog oak the dedication will look more subtle.

    I usually place the text on the cap of the pen, either on the side or at the bottom next to the "ring".

    How to choose your engraving

    Delivery time

    I send the pens Balíkovna for CZK 79, via Zásilkovna also for CZK 79, or by courier service / Czech Post to your address for CZK 128.

    I always ship promptly, at the latest by the next day after ordering, payment or approval of the engraving. Usually the pen, even with engraving leaves the workshop within 24 hours of ordering and it can be with you within two days. Everything after that depends on the speed of the delivery service you choose.

    Caring for a Novák pen is simple

    To keep the pen looking beautiful, rub it with linseed oil once or twice a month and let it soak in. The kind you can buy in any pharmacy is more than enough. How to get rid of scratches, or how to clean ink off the pen, is explained in the article about pen care.

    How a Novák pen is made

    Take a look at how every wooden Novák pen is made. In the video you can see almost the entire production process from the careful selection of the right wood, through cutting, drilling the blanks, gluing in the brass tubes and turning, all the way to the final assembly and packing into the box ready to ship.
