Product detailed description

The Portland S fountain pen made of exotic African Blackwood was created by me for smaller hands or for lovers of lighter writing pens. It is filled with classic ink cartridges, which you can buy in any stationery shop, and to make the pen a true original you can have it engraved with a message, a monogram, an important date, a name or nickname, a company logo and much more. You will find inspiration in the engraving samples.

Pen dimensions

This pen is called Portland S and it is the smallest of the three pen types I make. The length of the closed pen is approx. 131mm. An open pen measures from the tip to the end approx. 123mm. Including the cap it weighs approx. 35-40g depending on which piece of wood is used. The part you hold in your hand while writing alone weighs approx. 25g.

Is the pen too short or too light for you? In that case I would recommend the Portland L pens, or Altos, which are somewhat larger.

but a complete package

Every pen comes packed in this black luxury box, custom made for me by a Czech company. The package also includes a certificate of authenticity, on which you will find information about which wood the pen is made of, what it is treated with and that I really did make it personally.

How the pen writes - Portland S fountain pen smaller

The fountain pen, its nib and filling

For fountain pens I use as standard steel nibs in size M (medium), i.e. a medium width. If this nib width doesn't suit you, you can buy a better nib for the pen from the German company JoWo, which I stock in sizes from EF (extra-fine), F (fine), M (medium), B (broad), 1.1 and 1.4. You can see how each nib writes directly on the page of the individual nib. The photo shows text written with the standard size M nib that comes in every pen.

By default all fountain pens take standard "EURO" ink cartridges (one blue one is included in the package, see photo), but you can also get a converter(not included in the package), i.e. a refillable cartridge. You can then fill it with any ink you like straight from the bottle, which makes writing cheaper and definitely more colourful, because there are far more ink colours than cartridge colours.

Personal dedication

Every pen can be engraved with a personal dedication, message, or perhaps a monogram. I use a laser engraver for this. Thanks to it I can put almost any text you wish onto the wooden part of every pen. For inspiration on what can be engraved on a pen, I have put together a short text with more than 70 different ideas. You can also see what the engraved text looks like directly on the wood you like. In this gallery you will find samples of most of the materials I use. If you want the engraving to stand out nicely, I would recommend the lighter woods such as Teak, Zebrano, Padauk or Olive. On Wenge, American walnut or bog oak the dedication will look more subtle.

I usually place the text on the cap of the pen, either on the side or at the bottom next to the "ring"
